womanquestionexclamationWhen you find out that you have a cavity, you may not be happy but you probably have a decent understanding of what to expect and why we are suggesting treatment. However, if we tell you that you are suffering from gum disease, you may feel like you know very little about what’s happening, why it has happened, and what to expect in the future. Fortunately, we offer gum disease treatment to guide you back toward the oral health you deserve to enjoy. For a better understanding of how we will treat this periodontal concern, consider the following:

Let’s Diagnose You First

Not sure what gum disease actually is? To diagnose you, we will first examine your mouth. We will look for common symptoms of gum disease, which may include inflamed gum tissue, infection, plaque buildup beneath your gumline, and gums that look purple or red instead of a healthy pink. You may also suffer from bad breath that won’t go away, your teeth may feel loose or like they’ve shifted, or your gums may feel extremely sensitive. Once we diagnose you, then we may continue with treatment, which will vary from patient to patient.

Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease treatment is something we will need to customize for your particular level of disease. If your inflammation has just begun and you suffer from gingivitis, we can usually reverse and cure it with gum disease treatment. For more advanced periodontal disease, we can treat and control the problem but we cannot cure it. The sooner you visit us, the better.

Most gum disease treatment will begin with a deep cleaning called scaling and planing. We will remove plaque that has built up and hardened beneath your gumline. We will then smooth out areas of tooth tissue that have eroded, so plaque has less surface area for hiding and clinging. We may also apply localized antibiotic treatment to address existing infection. For severe periodontal disease, you may need additional treatment and restorative care to repair damage.
